96GB is a non-binary DDR5 capacity built from 24Gb DRAM dies. It lets a server land between the 64GB and 128GB steps, which matters when a workload wants more memory per socket than 64GB modules give but the 128GB price per gigabyte is not justified. Platform support has to be confirmed in the server memory guide before ordering.

DDR3, DDR4 and DDR5 modules are keyed differently and do not interchange, so the generation your platform accepts comes first. Registered (RDIMM), load-reduced (LRDIMM) and unbuffered (UDIMM) modules cannot be mixed in one system: add the type already installed, or replace the full bank. Match rank and speed to the existing modules, and read an installed part number from iDRAC or iLO when in doubt.
